Enphase performance guide

Enphase is the dominant microinverter manufacturer. Their IQ series offers panel-level monitoring and optimization. Microinverters eliminate single points of failure but individual units can still fail.

Warning signs to watch for

Enphase microinverters fail individually rather than causing system-wide outages. A clear warning sign is one or two panels consistently reading 20–30% below their neighbours in the Enlighten app — not just on cloudy days, but on clear days too. IQ7 microinverters from 2017–2019 batches had higher-than-average failure rates in hot climates.

Enphase — frequently asked questions

How long do Enphase microinverters last?+

Enphase IQ series microinverters carry a 25-year warranty, which is exceptional for inverter technology. Earlier IQ6 and M series units have a 15–20 year typical lifespan. The 25-year warranty aligns the inverter and panel lifespans, which simplifies long-term planning.

Why is one panel showing low output in my Enphase system?+

Enphase's per-panel monitoring makes it easy to spot individual microinverter failures. If one panel reads consistently low (not just on cloudy days or during partial shading), the microinverter on that panel has likely failed and needs replacement.

How much does it cost to replace an Enphase microinverter?+

An Enphase IQ8 microinverter costs $150–$200 plus installation labour (typically 1–2 hours). If the unit is within the 25-year warranty period, Enphase covers the hardware cost — you pay only for labour.

Does an Enphase system need a thermal inspection?+

Less often than string inverter systems, because individual failures are visible in the app. However, a thermal inspection is still valuable to identify panel-level issues like hotspots and microcracks that the microinverter data alone won't reveal.

What is the difference between Enphase IQ6, IQ7, and IQ8?+

IQ6 and IQ7 are earlier generations with 25-year warranties. IQ8 (current) adds grid-forming capability — meaning it can power your home during a grid outage without a battery, using only sunlight. If you have M series units (M190–M250), these are end-of-life and replacements are becoming necessary.

Can I add more panels to an Enphase system?+

Yes — each new panel gets its own microinverter, making it straightforward to expand. You'll need a licensed electrician to add panels and register them in the Enlighten app. There's no practical system-size ceiling with Enphase.
