SMA performance guide

SMA Sunny Boy inverters are rated for 15+ years. The base warranty is 5 years, extendable to 10 or 20 years. Many installations from 2010–2015 are still running, though some models have known capacitor failure rates around the 10–12 year mark.

Sunny Portal is SMA's monitoring platform for residential and commercial solar systems. It provides production data, alerts, and fault history. If your system isn't reporting to Sunny Portal, check the WiFi or Ethernet connection on the inverter — it's often a simple connectivity issue.

Common fault codes include: Insulation fault (often moisture in wiring or panels), grid relay failure, or overtemperature shutdown. Check the inverter display for a fault code, note the exact code number, then search SMA's online service portal before calling a technician.

SMA is one of the most respected inverter manufacturers globally, with a 40-year track record. Their engineering is German-designed and generally conservative — they run cooler and more reliably than many competitors. The main downside compared to newer brands is price.

Log into Sunny Portal and compare your daily or monthly kWh output to the same period in previous years. A decline of more than 5% on comparable weather days warrants investigation. SMA's yield monitoring tools can also benchmark against expected regional production.

Newer SMA inverters (Sunny Boy Storage and Sunny Tripower series) are designed for battery integration. Older string inverters typically cannot be retrofitted for storage — you'd need a separate hybrid inverter or an AC-coupled battery system like a Tesla Powerwall.
